asuo SUZUKI : Mikawaya Rice Shop

“Warm rice on the table makes a warm home. I’ve delivered LOVE to families in the town.”

Koshihikari, Yumepirika… these are all the brand names of rice. Rice is the staple food and indispensable item on the Japanese dining table. If you see a change at rice shops, you’ll learn the changes of Japanese families and their lifestyle. Rice tastes best right after milling, in addition to being good for you. Rice shops serve to deliver freshly milled rice to the people in town. However, these days few people do so. It seems that people think buying rice in supermarkets is natural and they have forgotten how to enjoy the flavor of freshly milled rice.

Mikawaya Rice Shop is location near Kiyosumi-Shirakawa Station and was founded in 1951. Yasuo Suzuki, the owner of shop, grew up here in Kiyosumi-Shirakawa and is the successor of his father’s business. He attempts to show the variety of rice brands to neighbors and makes rice into small-serving packs for small families and singles. The neighbors have gotten to know new ways of enjoying rice dishes. These days, these small packs are becoming a popular souvenir among tourists to Japan.
