Takayuki SHIINA : GLASS-LAB
“Opening the glass factory to new neighbors”
Takayuki SHIINA talks in a small, old factory to the beat of wooden gears grinding Edo glassware. Koto City is well known as a production area of Edo glassware, such as Edo-Kiriko glass (Cut glass). Takayuki’s grandfather founded the factory in 1950, passing it on to his sons (Takayuki’s father and younger brother). After graduating from university, Takayuki joined a large company but 3years ago, he resigned and returned to his family’s business.
His motivation for doing so was because he wanted to showcase his family’s glass creations in neighboring small businesses like restaurants and flower shops. Nowadays, he starts new company “GLASS-LAB” and opens their factory and offers glass polishing workshops every weekend as well as offers made-to-order original glass products. You’ll see his glass not only in his factory but also in many shops in the Kiyosumi-Shirakawa area.
He has also been the mastermind behind a series of co-speaking events “KOTALK” which introduce unique neighbors in a bid to connect locals and newcomers to Kiyosumi-Shirakawa and recruit people who carry the portable shrine at the Tomioka-Hachimangu Shrine festival. He also welcomes newcomers to the area.
